Have you ever tried learning a new sport, like golf or tennis? You buy expensive gear, spend hours practicing, and yet the ball never seems to go where you want it. In golf, you might swing and miss entirely or send the ball straight into the trees. In tennis, the frustration of chasing missed balls often outweighs the fun. For many people, these challenges can make sports feel more like a chore than a joy.
But imagine this: a sport that’s easy to pick up and play within minutes. One that’s fun and engaging, without requiring an extensive learning curve or specialized skills. Picture yourself meeting new friends, laughing, and staying active, all while enjoying a game that doesn’t even feel like exercise. Now, add in the fact that this sport is growing faster than any other in the world. That sport is pickleball—and it’s for everyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or experience.
As someone who’s played a variety of sports throughout my life, I can confidently say that pickleball is different. It’s approachable, it’s affordable, and it has the potential to transform how we approach physical activity and community building.
According to Sports and Fitness Industry Association, “Pickleball became the fastest-growing sport in 2022.”
For many people, staying physically active feels like an uphill battle. Life gets busy, gym memberships can be expensive, and traditional sports often feel inaccessible. Golf requires patience and precision, tennis demands coordination and speed. Both can feel intimidating for beginners. Add the demands of school, work, or family, and it’s easy to see why many people skip physical activity altogether. Yet, we know how important regular movement is for our health.
According to Pro Tour of Pickleball, “Pickleball improves cardiovascular health, reduces stress, improves mental health, improves flexibility which affects your muscles and joints, and can be part of your weight loss journey.”
Despite this, finding a workout or sport that’s both enjoyable and sustainable can be difficult. The game also accommodates all skill levels. Beginners can enjoy it right away, while advanced players can develop strategies and techniques to challenge themselves. It’s this balance of simplicity and depth that has made pickleball the fastest-growing sport in the world, but unlike other sports, pickleball doesn’t require hours of practice before you can enjoy a game. The rules are simple, and the court is smaller, making it less physically demanding than tennis or basketball but just as engaging.
Pickleball is a unique sport because of its inclusivity. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or someone who hasn’t picked up a paddle before, you can jump into a game and feel successful almost immediately. It combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, but it’s much easier to learn and play.
According to The Dink Pickleball, “In a world where divisions often arise from differences in race, religion, and culture, pickleball has emerged as a unifying platform. The sport’s inclusive nature has allowed people from distinct backgrounds to connect on a deeper level, fostering understanding and mutual respect.”
One of the sport’s greatest appeals is its accessibility. The gear is affordable, a basic paddle and a few balls won’t break the bank and courts are popping up everywhere. Here on the Drury University campus, we’re lucky to have the Panther Pad, a free pickleball court available to all students. It’s a space where anyone can show up, play and enjoy a game without any barriers.
Pickleball is also an incredibly social sport. Unlike activities that can feel solitary or competitive, pickleball fosters connection. It’s easy to play with friends, meet new people, and build a community around the game. Imagine heading to the Drury Panther Pad with your friends, laughing over your first few clumsy swings, and improving together week after week. It’s not just about playing a sport, it’s about creating memories.
Consider inviting a group of friends for a casual game. You’ll find yourself laughing, moving, and connecting in ways that feel effortless. And who knows? You might even discover a new favorite activity. If you’re hesitant, I challenge you to play just one game. Give yourself the chance to experience how accessible and enjoyable it is. You might find that pickleball isn’t just a sport—it’s a way to relieve stress, stay active, and build relationships.
