Springfield, Missouri has a vibrant performing arts scene that is showcased through many local venues. These venues cater towards music, theatre, dance, comedy, and acting for all ages. The community as a whole is committed to providing resources to foster talent, making it a dynamic hub for expressing creativity.
The Scoop met with multi-faceted performer Alyssa Hakan, who is currently studying Dance and Cinema Arts at Lindenwood University. She has performed in Dead Man’s Party at Six Flags St. Louis, TEXAS Outdoor Musical, and is a company member of moSTLy TAP, a St. Louis tap company. She has been dancing since the age of three. Her favorite theatrical credits include Beauty and the Beast, SpongeBob, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, White Christmas, and Matilda at Springfield Little Theatre.
5. Central High School Theatre
This theatre is located at Central High School in Springfield. It was built in 1940, after the school’s initial opening in 1893. The auditorium has been renovated to provide a more modern theater environment feel while preserving the original aspects of the architecture.
“The stage is great for dancing, elaborate set pieces, and large cast sizes. I’ve performed in, as well as choreographed many pieces for this stage. It’s a great set up for a school.”
4. Fox Theatre
This theatre is located in Springfield’s downtown area, on the square. It started as a movie theatre in 1916 and has slowly integrated changes throughout the years, turning into a performance space.
“It has a really cool sign that lights up the square, as well as a nice performance space with a rich history.”
3. Gilloiz Theatre
This historic venue is also located in downtown Springfield, just off of the square. It opened in 1926 and is able to seat just over 1,000 guests.
“This theatre is mainly used for concerts, but it truly is an amazing place to perform at. The atmosphere is fancy and many famous musicians have played here.”
2. Hammons Hall
This venue is fairly new and the most modern out of all the spaces on this list. It hosts touring shows that come through the city to provide exciting experiences in Springfield, Missouri. Shows like Mean Girls and Wicked have taken the stage at Hammons Hall.
“This stage is very large, so elaborate productions can occur here due to the gigantic stage size. The venue is really big with over 2,000 seats. Different performances and shows have different needs, and you can make almost anything happen with this space.”
1. Springfield Little Theatre
This community theatre is located on Springfield’s historic Walnut Steet. It has been around since 1934 providing both opportunity and entertainment. The auditorium is beautiful with lots of gold decor. The stage is nicely spacious which allows for large musical and dance productions.
“I have performed here many times, eventually getting to choreograph as well. The community at Springfield Little Theatre is extremely supportive. It is very inspiring to perform here.”
