Intergenerational rockers come together every spring on Drury University‘s campus for the annual Intergenerational Rock Band Concert.
It is intergenerational not only in music, but in personnel. The group is comprised of Drury students and Springfield community members over the age of 60. This year’s program consists of pieces that span from the 1950s to today.
Dr. Natalie Wlodarczyk, the creator and head of the ensemble, says the members,”are each learning music that is unfamiliar to them from the different generations and they are doing it together”.
The concert will be on April 24th in Clara Thompson Hall on Drury’s campus at 7:30. It is free and open to the public. Don’t wait too long to get there though–the auditorium fills up quickly!
This is the eighth year for the unconventional rock band. Dr. Wlodarczyk says its creation was inspired by a documentary called Young at Heart. It is “a film that shows a rock choir of older adults that are singing younger and more popular music”.
Drury’s ensemble isn’t just a choir but includes instruments such as drums, the keyboards, a bass guitar, and more. There are around 25 students and 30 community members who participate. If you look closely, you’ll maybe spot a few of Drury’s very own faculty in the band. Mark your calendars so you don’t miss this opportunity to rock out.
