The Humanities and Arts Film Series returns this fall to show the Springfield area more artistic cinematic works.
The first movie, to be shown Oct. 25, will be Elia Kazan’s “On the Waterfront,” an American crime drama starring Marlon Brando that won the Academy Award for Best Picture. After the movie at the Moxie Cinema, a discussion about the film will be led by Dr. Kevin Henderson, the director of the film series and an assistant professor from Drury University’s English Department.
The film series is funded by a grant from Missouri Arts Council along with funds from The Moxie Cinema and Drury’s Humanities and Ethics Center. The goal of the film series is to create a community discussion about the humanistic questions and themes brought up in both classic and contemporary films. After each film, a discussion will be led about the film and its humanistic themes.
Other movies to be shown this fall will be: “The Spirit of the Beehive,” presented by Dr. Heidi Backes on Nov. 8, and Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” presented by Dr. Peter Meidlinger and Jess Cagle on Nov. 15.
